What can I do?

There are a few things you can do to help the campaign, and we'll be listing them here with timetables for co-ordinated action.

In the meantime, we urge you to write to your MP asking them to oppose the measure and to sign the Early Day Motion asking the Government to reconsider its position using the guidelines set out in this paper here

Make sure you, your family and friends all sign the e-petition on the Downing Street website, which is now in the top 30 petitions.

There will be more actions to come soon, so register to receive our newsletters or set up an RSS feed to get the news as it's published.

I received a very nice letter from my MP today (a senior Conservative) who has
agreed to sign the EDM and to encourage other Tories to do so, including front
benchers. Already I've seen the signatures jump by over 20, so perhaps we can
get a little bit of extra momentum.

Hopes fading fast? This is the government which brought you the Hunting Act,
IR35, and the retrospective reinterpretation of S660A.

None of these has had
any impact other than costing the general taxpayer a great deal of
money.

Undeterred, our moral custodians continue to posture in the wake of
the Arctic defeat, but with proposed legislation which amazingly is even more
poorly framed than its appalling predecessors.

If the country wants to pay
for this...

Hearing the news that the chancellor has backed down on the "Non-doms"
tax is both a funny and sad story. Funny in that the HMRC has yet again shown
that most of the tax raising ventures they've embarked have not been thought
through at all. Sad in that the HMRC will become more determined to succeed in
pushing through the other tax raising ventures one of which is this Family
tax.:-(.
Hopes are fast fading away.

We have to accept that this is a Government that is desperate to increase tax
revenues and we are seen as (yet another) soft target. PAYE employees will
wonder what all the fuss is about, yet we have seen attacks on our Pensions, the
chaos of the CGT proposals and now this. Isn't it great being an entrepreneur
in Brown's Britain?! The beauty of their proposals, of course, is that they are
set out in such a way that we appear to in the wrong when we have been acting...
David mItchell  - Transferrable Allowances   |2008-02-06 20:29:50
Of course this whole problem wouldn't have arisen if the government hadn't
removed the ability to transfer unused tax allowances between partners. Perhaps
the FAIREST solution is to enable unused tax allowances to be transferred to
'lifetime' partners (I would say spouse but one has to be equality minded...).
This would then recognise the contributions made by non-working partners to the
ability of everyone to do their jobs whether in a 1 person or 1000 person

For goodness sake can more people get in touch with their MPs to sign the EDM,
having only 55 signatures I doubt it will even make it to the floor for debate.
Note very few Conservative signatures. Every one should encourage theirs ASAP.

To find out who it is follow this link (most of them have contact

Marc Neilon  - Lack of press   |2008-02-02 16:24:26
What really surprises me is the lack of coverage this subject is getting in the
press. The new legislation is likely to effect many thousands of families and
yet I have personally seen very little. Why is that? Perhaps the fact rermains
that anyone not effected, i.e. bona fide employees, simply thinks we've had it
coming and had it too good!

Coming from a European country I have been enjoying the unique conditions of the
UK in terms of business, free thinking and a non-nonsense approach to politics.
But I am affraid the UK is slipping into the bad practices of countries like
France, Italy or Spain. It has to be stopped.
